Personal Tax Returns

Self Assessment

Every fiscal year, taxpayers must submit a personal tax return (self assessment) if they have been notified by the Inland Revenue to do so.

Even if you have not been notified by the revenue to submit a self assessment tax return, you may still have to submit one if some of the following circumstances apply to you:

  • you became a director of a limited company during the fiscal year
  • you became a sole trader during the fiscal year
  • your earnings are high enough to place you in the higher rate tax bracket
  • you have more than one source of income
  • you have investments, shares, dividends, etc

If any of the above applies to you, you may need to submit an SA tax return.

The responsibility to submit the return rests squarely with the taxpayer and the absence of a notice issued by HMRC is no defence.
